So... yeah.... have you ever promised something "once in a blue moon?" Well, it's time to pay the piper. We will have our Blue Moon this Friday, August 31, 2012.
The moon most likely won't actually be blue, although I'm keeping my fingers crossed. (Remember my red moon?!) I've never seen a blue Blue Moon, but I did one time see everything blue but the moon. (photo above, flying out of Alaska)
A Blue Moon is most commonly referred to as the second full moon in one month. The first one, in this instance, being August 1st, my birthday.......
Technically, it's a little more complicated than that and has something to do with a season that has four full moons instead of three and the technical definition carelessly tosses around words like "equinox," "solstice," and "calendrical." Words I am not qualified to use.
The most recent Blue Moon was December, 2009, then June, 2007. The next one will be July, 2015 and then January of 2018. If you go by the technical definition, it's slightly different, but you'll be celebrating by yourself or maybe with a few nerdy purists.
1999 and 2018 boasted two blue moons in one year. It was January and March of '99 and I remember it well. No, of course not, I'm not that nerdy.
Take the time to at least peek at our Blue Moon. And yes, you have to fulfill all your promises whether you see the moon or not. It's gonna be my lucky day!!
... OR you can stay in your jammies on the couch and check out the live Blue Moon viewings on the very cool Slooh Space Camera.
