The 28th Annual SC Peanut Party

The oddest (well.... maybe not....) thing about rural SC is the festivals. Each town has its own weekend festival, year after year after year. People travel in their campers from festival to festival, vendors selling fair foods, parents amusing their children, and retirees having fun with old friends. Oh, and the occasional Yankee walking around perplexed, jaw dropped open, kind of like you might see in the big cities as the rural folk walk around skyscrapers and homeless people.

Salley is home to the Chitlin Strut, Springfield has the Frog Jump, Gilbert has the Peach Festival, and Pelion has been home to the SC Peanut Party for 28 years. More exciting events are added to the roster each year. New this year: Peanut butter sandwich eating contest. I think the peanutty milkshakes were new this year, too.

Anybody's Guess has played on the Stage at the Peanut Party for years, but returning for her second year, this year we had the Mattie Phifer Band sing the blues, instead of my friends from Anybody's Guess. Phifer has a long history with the blues and has recently returned to her SC roots. The Mattie Phifer band did not disappoint. At the end of the evening, Phifer invited her gandkids up to sing - just one song, now don't get all stressed - it was very cute.

To the heart of the matter. . .

. . . Fair Food.

Connie clearly enjoyed the roasted corn the most. Tom and Debra said it was pretty good, too, but Debra ended up wearing most of hers. We had to try the bloomin' onion, which was awesome, and the elephant ear (sadly lacking). We had the loaded sassy fries (vinegar, bacon, cheese and ranch). (wonder why nobody liked them??)

Of course the best thing at the party was the boiled peanuts. Someday I'm going to have a debutante. It'll go something like this:

Spiedies? I'd like you to meet Boiled Peanuts.

Boiled Peanuts? I'd like you to meet Spiedies.
